Missing your Start Menu in Windows 8?

On the eve of the retail release on Windows 8 I thought I might as well comment on this subject. Googling around it seems many people miss the Start menu. They miss it so much that some people even buy it back.

I’m not going to comment on whether it should be there or not but at this stage of development most of the programs you install will assume you have a start menu, and in fact, all the folders and files that make up the start menu are there.

I’ve seen other articles pointing people at the ‘all users’ start menu, but some programs, especially those installed in the user context will not put their stuff there. So I cobbled together  a crumby script that just makes a folder in your profile, copies the contents of both start menu locations (system and user) in there and removes a couple of bits that don’t work. It also adds a copy of itself to your ‘startup’ folder so that it updates when you logon. Navigate to that folder in the start menu and run it to update in real time.

You can then add that folder which will be in your profile and named ‘start’ as a toolbar on the taskbar. Move it to the left as per the article linked above and it works more or less like a basic start bar.

Is it shit? Yes. But it might be better than nothing as you get used to the new ways of Windows 8.

Simply copy the code below into notepad and save the whole load as something like Pseudostart.cmd on your desktop. The run it and add the toolbar.

md "%userprofile%\Start"
robocopy "%programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" "%userprofile%\Start" /e /xf desktop.ini desktop.lnk
robocopy "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" "%userprofile%\Start" /e /xf desktop.ini desktop.lnk
copy "%~dpnx0" "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

Oh yeh…

Want a Run command in there? Simply make a shortcut to %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f3-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0} and save it in the start folder in your profile 🙂

Enjoy!
